Research Theme: I have research projects in progress on coastal ocean and coastal ocean-atmosphere modeling, arctic meteorology, air-sea interaction and mode water formation, instability and predictability, mathematical methods for large-scale ocean circulation theory, and the linear and nonlinear dynamics of ocean eddies and planetary waves. My general goal is to improve our understanding of important physical processes through theoretical, numerical, and observational methods. Nares Strait, a narrow channel between Ellesmere Island and Greenland, is an important conduit for the exchange of ice and freshwater between the Arctic Ocean and Baffin Bay. With colleagues in the CATS program, I am investigating the meteorology and oceanography of this harsh but spectacularly beautiful region. Our understanding of the physics of coastal upwelling — the source locations, and pathways to the surface, of upwelling waters — remains poor. David Rivas and I have been studying this process using numerical simulations of Oregon coastal circulation.
